Chartering a private aircraft is no longer only for celebrities. Business teams, families, medical travellers and event organisers in India charter aircraft to reach places quickly, on their own schedule, often from airports with few scheduled flights. Here is how the process works from first enquiry to touchdown.
Step 1: Share your trip details
For an accurate quote, the charter team needs:
- Departure and destination cities (and any stops).
- Dates and preferred times, one-way or return.
- Number of passengers and approximate baggage.
- Special needs: catering, pets, medical equipment, ground transport.
Step 2: Choose the right aircraft
The aircraft depends on distance, passenger numbers and the airports involved:
- Turboprops: economical for shorter routes and smaller airstrips.
- Light and mid-size jets: faster, ideal for business trips between metros and regional cities.
- Large cabin jets: more space, longer range, for larger groups and international flights.
- Helicopters: for short hops and places without a runway. See our helicopter charter guide.
Step 3: Who operates the flight
In India, charter flights are operated by companies holding a Non-Scheduled Operator Permit (NSOP) from the DGCA. Their aircraft, pilots and maintenance are regulated. A charter service such as X Space works with these operators to find the right aircraft for your trip.
Step 4: Quote, confirmation and planning
The quote is usually based on flying hours for the whole trip (including any empty positioning legs), plus airport charges, handling, crew expenses for overnight stays and taxes. Once you confirm, the operator plans the flight: crew duty times, fuel, weather, airport slots and permissions.
Step 5: On the day
- Arrive shortly before departure; private terminals or general aviation areas make check-in quick.
- Carry valid photo ID for every passenger; security screening still applies.
- Your crew briefs you, loads the baggage and you take off on your schedule.
Tips for a smooth charter
- Book early for festival seasons, weddings and long weekends.
- Be flexible on airports: a nearby secondary airport may save time.
- Ask about empty-leg flights, which can be lower cost when an aircraft is positioning anyway.
- Tell the team about any change as early as possible; crew and permissions are planned in advance.
