When a patient needs specialist treatment in another city, hours can matter, and a long road journey may be unsafe. An air ambulance is an aircraft or helicopter equipped and staffed to move patients safely over long distances. This guide explains when it is used and how a transfer is arranged.
When is an air ambulance needed?
- Transferring a critically ill or injured patient to a hospital with specialist care.
- Long distances where road travel would take too long or be too risky.
- Organ transport and medical teams needing to travel urgently.
- Bringing a patient home after treatment in another city or country.
The decision is always made with the treating doctors, who confirm the patient is fit to fly and what support is needed.
What is on board
An air ambulance is configured like a mobile intensive care unit. Depending on the patient, it can carry a stretcher, oxygen, ventilator, cardiac monitor, defibrillator, infusion pumps and emergency medicines. A doctor and paramedic or nurse trained in aviation medicine accompany the patient throughout the flight.
Fixed-wing or helicopter?
- Fixed-wing aircraft (turboprops and jets) are used for longer distances between airports, within India or internationally.
- Helicopters suit shorter distances and can land closer to the hospital where helipads and permissions allow.
How a bed-to-bed transfer works
- Enquiry: share the patient's condition, current hospital, destination hospital and any equipment needed.
- Medical assessment: the medical team reviews the case with the treating doctors.
- Planning: aircraft, crew, airport permissions and ground ambulances at both ends are arranged.
- Transfer: the patient is moved by ground ambulance to the aircraft, flown with continuous care, and handed over directly to the receiving hospital.
What families should keep ready
- The patient's medical summary and latest reports.
- Confirmation of a bed at the receiving hospital.
- Photo ID for the patient and any accompanying relative.
- A contact person at each hospital.
A note on timing
Air ambulance flights depend on weather, airport operating hours and permissions. Calling early, even while doctors are still deciding, gives the team time to plan and saves precious hours.
